Them House Rules

Oct 11, 2004 in Diary-writer

In the OUP's House Rules, we've been told that chapter titles ought to have their first letters in upper case—with the exception of determiners and prepositions with lengths exceeding 4 letters.

In which case, a title should read, 'The World Is a Beautiful Place to Be in'—as opposed to what you'd think would be more aesthetically pleasing, 'The World is a Beautiful Place to Be In'. Verbs should have their first letters in caps, hence words like 'Am' and 'Is' would be capitalized in their initial positions.

The latest fashion in publishing though, says that only first letters in a phrase should be in caps. My boss says, 'It's terribly, terribly dated to follow the rules and all… you ought to know the fashion, oooh the fashion!!!'

Strange business, really. I'm going through the processes of re-learning and un-learning over and over again, and it's really a wonder that I haven't quite lost my mind yet.

That said, it's bout time I updated my profile. Maybe tonight, maybe tomorrow, and then I'll hyperlink the post indefinitely, stick it up and link it up next to my 'webcam' pic up at the right there. So if you see a strange 'doesn't quite fit there' exercise in narcissism sitting out here as one of my daily rants, please understand. I'm a blogger anyway, and I'm naturally in love with myself.

Ahah.
