Analogies

Nov 01, 2004 in Life-logger

We're pretty good at making up analogies when the time calls for them. For instance, now. I've got an analogy to explain things.

Just imagine you were in the first semester of a university degree course that you do not really like. Imagine there were problems handling the different subjects you have to take, those deemed necessary to move on to Semester II. So throughout the weeks in Sem I, you keep telling yourself, 'Urgh I don't want to do this course, don't want it, don't want it.'

But it's like this… after a while, you sort of get used to it, and because you don't like failing, no matter how much you have doubts in the usefulness of a course, you stay on, and you sit every test there is to pass the semester.

The final exam comes and its hell of a tough paper. After it, you sort of think, 'Gah…. I'm going to flunk that test. Gone case.'

But the results come out, and surprisingly you, 'sort of' pass.

Because you 'sort of' passed, your spirits are uplifted, and you find the nerve to pick up the next challenge. 'Okay… since I did ok in Semester I, and it's only Sem I, there's a chance I'll still be able to get first class honours at the end of it… Right then. Semester II it is.'

So you register for all the courses in Sem II, and you sit the first week, you actually enjoy it, and you promise yourself, you will do your best here.

Then suddenly, your granny, your uncle, your aunty, your dad, your mum, your sisters, your cousins, even cousin's girlfriends just decide to strut into the whole scenario. There's phone calls, discussions, there's meetings, a whole lot of gossip flying around the place. And they're all condemning the course… despite you having made the resolution to carry on and work the best you can. You're forced to quit studies, and do something else first. It's like you've bought something pretty satisfying for yourself, and just as you've started to learn how to enjoy it, someone pulls it out of your way and starts to say how bad it is.

Well, that's my analogy. Now that I look at it, it is rather hilarious, isn't it?
