So much for Guardian

Monday, August 22nd, 2005 @ 9:30 am | Diary-writer

If you're a manager for Guardian Pharmacy, and you so happen to read this… I wish to implore you to try to ignore some of the occasional swear-word which I will be presenting in this customer complaint post and see the message that this very disgruntled customer is trying to put across.

I'm going to tell you about what happened over the weekend. Well, specifically, last night after dinner.

Now what happened was this. Eric and I went to Sunway Pyramid to catch Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. After getting our tickets, I noticed that the bf seemed to having the onset of a runny nose, so I decided that he needed some Clarinase and we headed for the nearest pharmacy we knew of, which first happened to be Watson's Health and Beauty Store.

Unfortunately, this Watson's branch did not have a pharmacy counter, and I went up to the nearest sales assistant, who was this sweet young lady standing around the shelves ready to provide assistance. Conversation went like this.

Me: You don't have a pharmacy here yeah?
She: Oh I'm sorry, maaf lah, here we don't have pharmacy. So sorry. You could try Guardian downstairs.

See see see! Where got people so nice tell you to go to a competitor's shop one? That's Watson's for you. She even went all the way to tell me how to get to Guardian. "kat Giant bawah tu…' she said, and so I went downstairs.

Well, I did not expect Guardian to have any pharmacist on-duty, knowing Guardian. Now speaking of which, Guardian has a horrible set of pharmacists who are never at the counter when you need them the most. You go to the end of the store near the counter, and you see a schedule, and they're always either off duty or on lunch breaks. Which is hilarious. I'm not sure which huge company policy decided that pharmacist for the Guardian chain works on the normal office shift hours… which makes it impossible for office workers like myself to ever get anything from your counters.

But a bit on that later. Today I'm going to complain about the Store Supervisor first.

So well, I went, Eric was at MPH next door checking out on stuff, and I went to the end of the pharmacy, hoping to get the pharmacist before she got off. A schedule board said that the pharmacist was not in, and I also noted this.

Mondays to Fridays: 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.

A Store Supervisor happened to be lingering in the corner, scowling or something I don't know lah but I decided to ask her anyway, 'Hi Miss, I noticed that the pharmacist is not in.'

'She not on duty,' said the sour-faced woman.

'I see. What time will she be back?' said me, hopeful.

'You come back tomorrow. She's off already.'
'Urm. Is there any other pharmacy in the area where I can get a pharmacist?'

At this point, the stupid bitch stared at me with an expression so blank, you'd think that I had said something idiotic. So I repeated the question again, 'You know? I need something urgently, and it's not really a prescriptive drug. It will be great if you can tell me where I can go to get what I need.'

'You can walk outside. Sure got one.'

KNNCB.

WHAT KIND OF STUPID RESPONSE IS THIS? From the store supervisor some more.

To top up with the atrocious lack of courtesy, just as I was about to say 'Thank you', the bitch turned away just as I uttered the 'Th…'

Guardian Pharmacy and etc., I can say this for sure, your customer service simply SUCKS.

***

Now since I'm at this, I also want to point out the problem with the Pharmacist On Duty schedule that Guardian has… it's bugged and it makes no sense. You have a Pharmacist on duty from 10 am to 6 pm daily, except for Sundays, where the pharmacist is most likely enjoying his or her holiday like the rest of us. I also recall that if I choose to visit the pharmacy during lunch, the pharmacist is also very likely to be on lunch break.

I'm sorry but there's just no sense in this. This just means that for me, the potential customer, to get anything from your pharmacy, I'd have to take some time off work just to get to the pharmacy in order to catch the pharmacist… that is, if I'm lucky that she'll be in when I get to go.

Also, since I'm at the office from 8 am to 6 pm daily, this just means that it is completely IMPOSSIBLE for me to ever meet a pharmacist on duty at Guardian pharmacy, which leaves me no choice but to run to your direct competitor, Watson's, who of course, has better and more polite sales assistants and a far superior pharmacy, if a branch just happens to have a pharmacy counter.

For example, on Thursday night at around 9.30 pm, I went to the pharmacy at Watson's Midvalley, and a very helpful pharmacist was at the counter ready to provide professional assistance. I'm quite certain that if I were to walk into Guardian instead, there wouldn't be a pharmacist at the counter.

***

I surfed the net and I checked this off the list of Commitments and Principles at the Guardian website.

Commitment #2 Offer excellent customer service by always having customer's best interests at heart and striving to surpass their expectations.

Principle #2 A customer is not an interruption to our work. He is the purpose for it.

Principle #3 Show enthusiasm in all things you do. It is contagious!

Well, I'd say this, if Guardian's version of 'enthusiasm' is exemplified in the way the Sunway Pyramid branch's store supervisor spoke to me, I'm not quite sure if it's a good thing to say that that attitude ought to be contagious. Right now, as far as I'm concerned, Guardian has got a lot of things to do about training and teaching their workers how to be polite and helpful to disappointed customers like myself.

  1. Reta Says:

Had the same particular problem when I hopped over to guardian ss15 say around 9pm-ish.

“How can they open a pharmacy without a pharmacist at duty???”

    nonsense.

  2. james Says:

I sometimes prefer smaller shops where the pharmacist is actually the owner of the operation.

  3. Kenneth Says:

ok… so I am not the only one that thinks Guardian services sucks. Many a times, it was just a simple enquiry and I get rude remarks. There was even one time when the person behind the counter totally ignored me… and I went “er hello? I didn’t know the hire deaf people at the counter.”

Anywho… to give them the Benefit Of The Doubt, maybe Guardian just overworks them.

  4. minishorts Says:

if you guys think that Guardian seriously has a lot to do in terms of customer service improvement, please leave your comments. I’m hoping that someone reads this.

I’ve also filed a complaint feedback at the store site.

And yes, Ken and Reta, Guardian is getting a whee bit cocky what with their store expansion plans. James, I prefer those too, but sometimes, when you’re at a departmental store, you’d no choice but to go for the biggies, like Guardian.

  5. spot Says:

didn’t have any problems with the pharmacist at the 1-Utama branch yesterday. nice young girl was v helpful.

  6. doovad Says:

    Hello.
Haha. I never knew so many others have been affected similarly.
Usually I need to get Panadol CF for cold and fever. Of course you get them after work or dinner on the way back. Too busy trying to stave off the flu at work. Forget Guardian.

Phamaceutical companies should pressure Guardian about this. i dread if the medication needed were for toddlers.

About the service at Guardian, I believe there will be different experiences. I was in fact directed by someone at one of the Guardian in PJ to a small pharmacy one floor up, with a smile and concern too. This was on a Sunday afternoon. Of course I got my PCF, but would not have if the kind Malay lady at Guardian did not help me with.

So buck up, Guardian. Thanks Guardian, Damansara Jaya.

  7. S-Kay Says:

Only Guardian does that. Stupid. Even Carings pharma has its pharmacist on duty from 10am-10pm at night. As long as the shop is open, the pharmacist will be there cept during lunch breaks.

  8. ahlian Says:

minishorts, u should look at her from head to toe as if u dunno her when she rudely cutt-off ur thank u so she knows how u feel when she does that to u……u have my support…

  9. Yian Says:

I’ve faced similar problems with the pharmacist being off duty in Guardian. But I think it’s only a problem with certain branches.

I went to Guardian 1Utama last night(Sunday) around 9+pm and there was a pharmacist there…

  10. producer Says:

it happened to me too… until i had to tell them where do i work n give them my name card..n then only they gave it to me ..in fact i called the pharmacist directly n had a good chat wif her..cos sometimes we know what kind of medicine we need to take…we have brains …n we can tell the pharmacist the side effects of the certain medicine..i’m going to make a story for this in a tv station..bout the bad service..n i;m going to b an undercover for this..

  11. percolator Says:

OTOH, I had a rather happy experience with a helpful Guardian pharmacist esewhere. I urgently needed Augmentin, a prescription anitbiotic, for which I forgot to bring my script. WHen I asked for her to call up my doc to verify, she very readily and kindly obliged. Now, not all pharmacists would bother to ring up. It’s either you have a script and get what you need or you don’t have it and, well, just too bad, you poor sod!

  12. SaDdNesZ.jc Says:

Buying prescription stuff from guardian branches are like trying to get RM1 million from the 4-D shops. You’ll never know when they’re in. Most of the time, I would be in dire need for some cough tablets and something for sinus, chances are, i won’t beable to buy them because the pharmacist on duty is not in. Even if there is a pharmacist manning the counter, it’s not like they’re there to offer any good advise also. I will ask for Tussils5 and they will be like, “You want the pack of 6 or the box of 24’s?” Like, can’t any other customer service personnel do that?

I don’t need a pharmacist to ask me how much of the drug i want? Do I?

  13. A Visitor Says:

Guardians in Malaysia could be better, but Guardian in Singapore is excellent. Had a bout of asthma while on holiday recently and dropped in at the one in Centrepoint, Orchard Road because I was desperate. Was not expecting much because it was a Saturday afternoon. Lo and behold there were FIVE pharmacists on duty at the cramped 6-foot length pharmacy counter. Service was fast, they dispensed my drug without the need for a prescription (required in Malaysia) and I only had to pay SGD1 (that’s right, ONE dollar) for 10 tablets.
Amazing… but maybe it’s different over there because doctors cannot dispense medication so there are standards to be observed. In any case, good show Guardian Centerpoint Orchard Road Singapore!! You saved my life and a few bucks.

  14. Yuen Li Says:

There’s a shortage of pharmacists, so Guardian can’t hire enough to cover all the opening hours (or so Guardian claims)…

My bro works for Guardian. He works long hours, particular those hours when he thinks the pharmacy is busiest, so you often find him in-store during nights and weekends. And his customers love him too! For example, they often give him presents. Unfortunately, they only go to him for advice (coz they trust him) – and then they go to other stores for their prescription meds, coz Guardian is apparently more expensive!

In the UK, it is a legal requirement that a pharmacist be present in order that a pharmacy be able to open to customers…

  15. disco-very Says:

yeah! watsons personnel have that really pleasant disposition; i always feel happy shopping there. Caring Pharmacy is also recommended.

guardian is just so cold and clinical. and their staff seem a little aloof.

  16. Mugg-ly Says:

i did a promotion job in guardian bb plaza before. The normal staffs were alright but the real bitchy ones were the store managers and the pharmacists (not all though but mostly). then, they hv this sudden shortage of stocks which they made me walked all the way to 3 other departmental stores low yat, kl plaza n another carrying shitload of products. And the other store managers are equally rude n brainless as well. Nvm bout that.

There’s this i was looking all over for a ‘purifying pill’ to purify unfiltered water. The pharmacists obviously had no idea what the purifying pills are but pretended they know n try searching for it n told me i could get it at MV. SO i actually drove over there to hv the pharmacists there telling me she had no shit idea bout the pills. From then, caring pharmacy’s my choice.

  17. jkaiser Says:

actually clarinase is a controlled drug i think…and even in singapore, the pharmacist works office hours, which is seriously very odd.. n even may-jul, they get pharm students on attachment who earn peanuts for 1.5mths of work, like 500 dollars…even cleaner may get more than that man… anyway kudos to u if u manage to get guardian to wake up their idea

  18. Dabido (Teflon) Says:

Oooooo, I am now wondering about which drugs I can take with me when I travel to UK (via Sydney, Malaysia, Japan, Netherlands). I need to check up, as I need my asthma, stomach and migraine medication with me. The Migraine one might be a bit bad, as I think it contains codine in it (which is a controlled substance requiring prescription in some countries and banned on some others).
If I need any in Malaysia, I will definitly go to Watson and not Guardian.

  19. Hot Pants Says:

Guardian must really suck with such bad service. Maybe you could try the Chinese Medical Shops, for one, they wouldn’t call you “kat”.

  20. wind Says:

    Hahaha.

JKaiser, I think you may be talking about me. Cos I did the 1.5 mth attachment and the pay is really peanuts. Not enough to cover even a meal + transport. But it’s a good opportunity to gain experience before we graduate.

Clarinase is not controlled, just Pharmacy only item. Means the pharmacist HAS to be around before a customer can get it. :)

This post is really cool. Didn’t know there’s so much diff between Guardian in Sg and Msia.

  21. vss3t Says:

at least it’s not as bad as Jaya Jusco. Jaya Jusco really sucks like hell. all Jusco sucks.

  22. Primrose Says:

Ermm, ok, will send this link to a friend who manages ALL Guardian outlets.

  23. jkaiser Says:

winD>> ok i get the distinction, but how come the pharmacist in malacca still needed me to fill up my name and address in a logbook?

    u’re a pharmer? haha i got quite a few pharm frens…

  24. meme Says:

amen!! I totally empathise with the scenario.
I tot it was just my lack of good timing all this while. Everytime i head over to Guardian to get something.. it’s almost impossible to get the pharmacist. (figured most of the staff has ongoing PMS or something)

  25. rkaru Says:

minishorts, if you don’t mind, I’ll print your blog entry plus all the comments and make sure the printout gets to Guardian’s top lady honcho.

    what say you?

  26. minishorts Says:

rkaru: sounds good. ‘bring it on!’ quoting errolyn ;)

  27. Are you pharmacist (no i'm not but leave a name: 202.156.6.37) Says:

After eading so much here..I think you guys got a big problem yourself. While the main body says minishort goin to watch movies…are you expecting all whoa re pharmacists to be there for you while you watch movies he work blabla ? How bout you become a pharmacist and be the first guardian pharmacists that nobody complain and nobody cant find ?

If you can do that, write in and tell them, fire the rest cause there are pharmacists like you willing and able and can forget about dinner, lunch, family, own business to be there waitin for you to come out of nowhere suddenly just to get what you alone need.

my 2 cents worth. Well, if you gonna screen this comment away, it’s not a worthy blog :)

  28. Ex-Guardian Says:

As a pharmacist who worked in guardian malaysia before, i believe i deserve the right to speak up here.

We, pharmacists, always look for the opportunity to practice what we learned in order for us to achieve job satisfaction. Our job in a community pharmacy is to provide pharmaceutical care such as dispensing the right medicine with the right advices to the right person at the right dose. Every pharmacist loves to provide such services but such chances r very very rare in guardian.

In guardian, pharmacists work like a clerk + dispenser (esp those store managers). The management gives us all sort of paper work to do untill it occupies most of our time and it overwhelms most pharmacists. Right, the quality of pharmaceutical care is not there. Furthermore, Guardian mgt focuses a damn lot on promotions and pharmacists hv to set up all these promotions themselves (including finding empty space for 100plus). We r not happy with all these non-sense and thats why more of us r leaving this “supermarket” including those senior pharmacists. They just piss us off!!!

In contrary, I am happy with my current company where at least one pharmacist is on duty thru out the business hour.

  29. Kristy Says:

I am a pharmacist from Guardian. I understand your sentiments exactly. But let me clarify a few things.
    1) Guardian tries to keep their bigger outlets (ie KLCC, MV, 1UTM) stocked with pharmacists from morning til night. As for smaller outlets (like the one I’m manning), there isn’t enough budget to hire more than one pharmacist at one time.
2)People who do not have children, or are not married, like me, often work afternoon shifts because I know that’s when people get off work and come in for medication. I also work every weekend and take my off day on a weekday. Other pharmacists, however, may have a family, a husband, children, whom they want to go home to. This is why they choose to work normal shifts (from 9-6), mainly because their spouses work normal shifts as well. Are they to be blamed for wanting to spend time with their families?
3)The myth that working from 9-6pm is a company policy for Guardian pharmacists is just that – a myth. We are encouraged to work afternoon shifts but we respect those who cannot, because they have their own reasons.
    4) Independent pharmacies (whereby the owner is the pharmacist; or employs pharmacists) normally have a pharmacist from morning til night because these pharmacists are only required to work 4 days a week. The number of hours they work is 48. The owner hires someone else to take over for the remaining three days. This is not the case in Guardian, where we are supposed to work 5 and 1/2 days a week and therefore our 48 hours of work are scattered into shifts throughout.
    5) Please do not generalize. There will always be good staff and bad staff, but human nature will ensure that bad service is always highlighted but not good service. The pharmacist in Sunway Guardian is a very, very nice Singaporean lady and she will surely be appalled to hear how her supervisor has been acting. Contrary to popular belief, handling staff and training them isn’t all that easy.
    6) I try to tell most of my customers my weekly working hours, as well as giving them my name cards to ensure that I will be there when they come. But it is disconcerting to find out that many of them still complain they cannot find me. Like me, many Guardian pharmacists take less than an hour’s break, and come back to be scolded for eating lunch. And no, our lunch time isn’t your lunch time. Most of us go out around 3 or 4pm, and not the standard 12-2pm.
    7) Do give Guardian another few tries. You might just change your mind. We do try our best to meet our commitments and principles. Thank you!
    8) Writing names and addresses when buying medicine is part of the law. We have enforcement officers coming in to check on a regular basis. Independent pharmacies take the time to make up names and addresses but we don’t. Likewise, we do not sell prescription only medicine without prescriptions because it is against the law. We risk losing our dispensing licence, more so because Guardian is a big company and the authorities tend to check upon us more. They even pose as customers and beg you to sell prescription only medicine to them, and if you do – there goes your career. Which is why people tend to compare us to independent pharmacies because they sell most medication without prescriptions.
    9) It is not wrong to ask whether you want Tussils 6’s or 24’s, because if we give your the 24’s automatically you might think we’re after your money. Some customers would prefer to try it out first and see whether it works for them. We recommend the medicine, you decide which packaging you prefer.
    Cheers!

  30. Ven Says:

Just to correct some of the facts in the comments. A pharmacy could be open to the public even without the presence of a Pharmacist. The only thing the pharmacy can’t do without a pharmacist is selling any Pharmacy only drugs and Prescription only Medication. General Sales Listed drugs are absolutely fine to be sold without the supervision of a pharmacist.

  31. WorkingHard Says:

    Generally ignorant Malaysian public… *sigh*

    Marehysia boleh!

  32. Financial Analyst Says:

    products for deaf people

can u provide more information ?

  33. Jeffrey Says:

After reading some of the comments about Guardian Pharmacy, i think the customer service at Guardian Pharmacy is not that bad la… If you ask me which pharmacy do i prefer between Guardian & Watson, i think i prefer Guardian far more than Watson. I went to so many branches of Guardian Pharmacy & i feel very comfortable when shopping there. I went to its branches at Klang Utama Shopping Centre, Eng Ann Garden, Klang Parade, Jusco Bukit Raja & etc. and i don’t think there is any problem bout Guardian Pharmacy’s customer service because all the pharmacists, cashiers and workers there are very very very friendly and helpful compared to Watson’s. I have been to Watson’s branches at Klang Parade & Shawcentre Point, Klang & trust me, the customer service there sucks! All the workers there are not only “deaf” but “blind” as well…

But all of the above are only my point of view, hope these won’t disturb anyone’s feelings…

  34. yn Says:

yeah…i totally agree with u. i think Guardian takes its customers for granted. the customer service is sooooo bad that had they been operating in the uk/us, they would have been out of business a long long time ago.

btw, when i normally encounter rude assistants, i normally ask them the this quesstion “why are you being so unpleasant? have you been having a bad day?”, loud enough for everyone in the queue to hear. As for store supervisors, try something like “well, i cant really blame the assistant for being so rude/unhelpful, if this is how you are behaving, can i?”

the main problem with guardian is that they normally hire slackers that have got this ‘tidak apa’ attitude, on top of being rude. try: Guardian Kintacity, or Guardian Summit and you’ll know what i mean.

  35. priya Says:

I am a regular customer of Guardian Pharmacy at Wisma Etonic Rawang. I am Priya. My working hours is 9-5. so usually i will come at night (8.00 pm). Everytime when a went there to buy a medicine the will be no pharmacist incharge. My question is why did Guardian provide a pharmacy counter but there ic no pharmacist. so everytime when i came there the staff on duty will ask me to come in the morning. So as a customer it is not right for your staff to ask me when should i come. i will come according to my convenient time. so please put one of your pharmacist on duty at night. I beleive that they have a 2 pharmacist there if i’m not mistaken their name is Ong bee lean and Nora. I hope that Guardian will hired a very good pharmacist have a reason for saying this because, i did ask one of the pharmacist there but she could not give me a right answer. Her name is Nora. So i hope that Guardian will take a step for this matter. Remember Customer Is Always Right!

  36. Pasminder Says:

my name is pasminder. i am a regular customer at Guardian in rawang. i would like to make a complaint bout the staff. Yesterday i went to guardian to buy a vitamin, so i ask one of the staff, she is a supervisor, Siti Halijah. I ask her ” Can u please find for me a vitamin e which is suitable for a person who have a very dry skin and at the same time it can helps to lighten a scar…I do not know what wrong with her, She said: Farmasi dah tutup, u datang besok pagi,.. i am really piss off with her because she dont put her effort to attend me and answer my questions. as far as i know vitamin is not in the pharmacy counter. it is displaying outside. Moreover the way she talk is very rude and i can’t accept that..please teach her how to treat customer. As a customer, i pay and i expect that i’ll be giving a good treat. She can have a time to talk with her friends another time, but once u at working place please concerntrate to your customer and your work. Please teach her how to communicate with a customer. Tell her that without a customer who is going to pay her salary!!!

  37. Dawn Lim Says:

    Dear Pasminder,

I am a registered pharmacist in Malaysia and had worked with Guardian before. Currently i am not practising in any pharmacy outlets. First of all let me apologize and address your problems.
There are alot of brands around for Vitamin E. A good brand would be Natural Factor. This is the brand i always recommend for customers. Because you have very dry skin, i would recommend you to take Evening Primrose Oil as well for its Omega 6 or Gamma Linolenic Acid.A second alternative would be Flaxceed Oil. All the supplements above i would stil recommend Natural Factor. A combination of Vitamin C + B + Zinc will do wonders to your skin as well. Brands like Blackmoores is good enough. As for your scar, is it pimples scar or cause by other reasons? There are many alternatives ranging from poisons to non-poisons. Poisons are like Mederma Cream, and non-poisons are alternatives like Grapeseed Oil and Emu Oil. I have personally tried all for my face scar cause by pimples, and i find that Emu Oil is great for healing scars and black spots on skin.

Internal oral skincare supplements like Estime does lighten the colour of scars effectively. There is no harm trying as i am taking it myself. So far so good. Sorry, regarding your dry skin again, there is this supplement called Hyaluronic acid (HA) is exceptionally great for dry skin. The best effect is to take 50MG twice daily with Vitamin C.

    Thank you

  38. Nani Says:

    Dear Dawn Lim,

Where can i buy the Emu Oil? Is it available in the pharmacy like Guardian? Appreciate your help. Thanks

  39. June Says:

    Hey Dawn,
wonder if u still need Emu oil??
i got mine frm Pure aid Pharmacy @ TTDI Plaza, Tmn Tun recently..
may be u can try getting fmr there..

  40. Grace Says:

    Hi June,
You can get Emu Oil from Alpro Pharmacy in Jaya 33, at Seksyen 13. The customer service there is not bad and they normally give discounts. By the way, there are a lot of good restaurants in Jaya 33…I enjoy Vintry and the Italian Kitchen there

  41. ekin Says:

saya dapati farmasi ini tidak beri layanan baik….bahagian farmasi selalu tutup…

  42. Max Says:

    U R RITE.
    WATSON STAFF VERY FRIENDLY.
THIS GUARDIAN STAFF ONLY IRRITATING LIKE THAT GUARDIAN IS LIKE BAPAK DIORANG PUNYA..GUARDIAN KENA PERHATI HAL INI..

  43. Sr Says:

First of my mind, as a pharmacist in Thailand, I thought the other countries would have the better health care system comparing with Thailand’s. However, the number of pharmacists in Thailand is not very shortage, so if you go to Boots, Watsons or other chain pharmacies in Thailand you will be able to find pharmacists on duty. Not every time that you can, but if the pharmacies are in the department stores you will (it’s about the cost of hiring). Even the small pharmacies outside the department stores, you will be able to see pharmacists. However, I think I like the way that they don’t sell the POM and Dangerous medicine when there is no pharmacist in Singapore more than anyone can sell medicines which is not save for patients even they have a brain. I don’t have an idea for Guardian b’coz I haven’t tried once when it was in Thailand but for Watsons in Thailand I don’t think that it’s better than the pharmacies owned by pharmacists.

  44. engku Says:

last week i going to mid valley branch…i think the manager name ms.mogana very badly attitude…she angry the staff in front customer and treat customer not properly…maybe she period!!!!!!!i”m suck her…better gave her warning letter or some counselling…i”m disspointed what has done in the branch..

  45. khaty88 Says:
