Being Malaysian…

ADD ON: It is amazing how some people forget that today, being 16th September, is Malaysia's birthday. Today in 1963, Malaysia was born to include Sabah, Sarawak and Singapore. Two years later, Singapore became independent. But the point is this: while 31st August is Independence Day, 16th September remains truly, Harijadi Malaysia.
I'm going to take a cue from Scalzi with his infamous 'Being Poor', but to avoid being accused of blatant plagiary, I'm going to change it a little.
Being Malaysian means you grew up singing that 'Bangun Pagi, Gosok Gigi' song as a kid.
Being Malaysian means that you had to enrol for Primary 1 when you were only 4 years old.
Being Malaysian means you grew up eating breakfasts of soda biscuits and milo panas.
Being Malaysian means you get to eat roti canai at any time of the day.
Being Malaysian means you can proudly declare that Assam Laksa, Char Kuey Teow and Bak Kut Teh are home-made products.
Being Malaysian means you celebrate your birthdays with a pre-ordered Secret Recipe cake.
Being Malaysian means everytime you go to Penang you come home with boxes of Tau Sar Pneah for friends and relatives.
Being Malaysian means that everytime a friend is going to get married you spend days thinking about how much to put into that red packet.
Being Malaysian means when you come to the Klang Valley you have reunions with old friends at Mid Valley Megamall, KLCC or Sunway Pyramid.
Being Malaysian means you have barbecue parties and try to make sure the parties end before 12, lest the neighbours complain.
Being Malaysian means you walk on the roads being afraid that two-men on a bike might come near you and snatch your beg away.
Being Malaysian means you walk in carpark also can get scared, cos you never know what will happen.
Being Malaysian means you have to think before you say anything, but I think this applies to being humans anywhere, anyway.
Being Malaysian means you have to learn how to tolerate everyone for his/her own differences.
Being Malaysian means you get to drive once you're in Form Five!
Being Malaysian means that when you swear you say kantoi, pukimak, tiuniamachauhai, fuck or knncb, all at the same time.
Being Malaysian means you know more than two languages and a few dialects in between.
Being Malaysian means you love Malaysia for all her eccentricities, yet hate her for all her flaws.
Being Malaysian means you care, and you want the best for her, even though your version of 'what's best' may be skewed… yeah we all do care.
Happy Birthday, Malaysia. I HEART YOU VERY MUCH!
