Getting through the first day of Nano

“On the first day of Nano, my novel said to me,
Get off your asssssss…..”

It looks like my Nanowrimo effort is off to a slow start. I managed less than a thousand words yesterday. Well, it was actually very much less than 1000. More like 500. Let’s see what my excuse was. Aha! Yesterday was Deepavali and I had people to visit.

I woke up late in the morning coz it was a holiday. Then went for brunch and shopping.

Came back, had a quick shower changed and I was ready to go out again.

An Indian friend of mine held an Open House and so, Hot babe and I went over in the afternoon. I couldn’t stop eating the fantastic mutton dalca. And then there was the mutton curry that was simply delightful. Hot damn! I love mutton. I don’t know what it is with goats, but they produce really good stuff.

Do you know how many ways there are in using a goat? Never mind. Don’t answer that question.

Do you know the top three reasons why people go to Open Houses? The answer is “Food, food, and food”, in that particular order.

When I came back home after feeding my face silly, I remembered that I was supposed to work on my Nanowrimo novel. But I was feeling kinda drowsy from all the mutton that I unabashedly consumed, so I decided to take a nap. Woke up at around dinner time, but was still too stuffed to eat dinner.

Dad asked me why I wasn’t eating, and I told him to blame it on the goat.

I had learned early in life that whenever things go wrong, it is almost always the goat’s fault.

Watched TV for a while at night, totally zonked out, and then remembered that a great Nanowrimo novel was waiting to be written. Hence, I typed my opening line:

“It was a dark and stormy night.”

Good eh? Except that my story did not start on a dark and stormy night. So I edited it out.

Wah lau eh. I typed something and I edited something! I was getting somewhere! That is exactly the kind of exciting shit that we kickass authors do.

I carried on typing. By the time I decided that it was time for bed, I had managed five hundred words. Yeeeee haaaaaa! Of course, Minishorts had done 2800 words. Another Nanoer, Eyeris, left a comment in my blog that he managed 3672 words. Geng chau, man! These horses are off to a flying start. Well, against that kind of peer writing pressure, my 500 words don’t look like much.

But, hey, I am not worried because I have a secret weapon.

It is called DA LAST MINUTE.

Without that LAST MINUTE, you know that nothing ever gets done in this country! But still, I will have to find a way to increase my speed today.

Best of luck. I left my suggestions etc at your site … and don’t want to write the same sort of thing here and waste everyone’s time having a repeated, tautological, repetitive, iterative and duplicated entry. :-)

da last minute effect is a great and divine power!!! i get it often when trying to complete my assignments……..heehee:mrgreen:

  13. Mei Says:

Actually at 5pm today, it was 9055.

BUT it doesn’t matter and it shouldn’t matter. As long you write at a speed you’re comfortable with and finish, who cares what other people do?

  14. emily Says:

am rather surprised… to learn that you teach… no offense, just that it never struck me that you teach and you don’t seem like the kind that teach… only english?

all the best to you students… :)

  15. Eliar Swiftfire Says:

Yeah. 3500 for me. My target is 2000 each day, seems that I was 500 short last night. But I’ll be fine. It’s hard joining the thing in the last minute (or more precisely, AFTER Nano has started) without a clear idea what I was going to write. So I’m just making shit up as it goes.

  16. viewtru Says:

Mei: 9055? You can finishthe novel in two weeks!

emily: You must be referring to minishorts, because I am not an English teacher. Are you sure about that, coz I did not know taht she was one either.

Eliar: 2000 a day is reachable. I did that yesterday. But did not have time for editing and rewriting.

  17. the other kenny Says:

    writing.. yeck…. I can’t even write up to 200 words…

anyway! add oil to whoever joins the nanowrimo!! especially to Claire since this is her site. Get ur lazy bum sit in front of the computer and start writing dammit!
