Soapy Soaps

I am a TV addict. I find it hard to live without the idiot box staring back at me at the end of a tiring day. But if you were to ask me what my favourite TV drama is, I would be hard pressed to name even one.

A rose by any other name would smell as sweet, no? Similarly, a soap opera by any other name would stink as bad. I abhore soaps, and some so-called 'TV dramas' these days are just as bad. Not surprisingly, as the majority of people are usually morons, I seem to hold the minority opinion and hence I cannot understand the craze behind some of these 'soaps':

1) OC - One fine day many moons ago, someone decided to make a show about rich people whinning about their miserable lives. They called that show 'Dynasty'. Boy, that was a huge hit. And now, some blokes decided to revive a soap to remind everybody how mediocre their lives were compared to those rich people. Would you watch a soap called PJ? I thought not.

Redeeming points : Great soundtrack. I'll give them that.

2) Smallville - A show about Superman as a kid. COOL! That's what I thought when I first heard of it. Superman is cool, and hence a superman series should be cool. Boy I was wrong. I watched one blinking episode of it and hated it in an instant.

Apparently, Superman did face loads of juvenille problems in school…the same problems every other teenage kid faces. But wait..Superman's not every other kid. He's goddamn Superman! If you were to travel back into time, think of all the problems you faced as a teenager. Now, if only you had Superman's powers……..

Redeeming points : It's still essentially a Superman show which saves it from being a flop. Oh, and apparently some girls think that the bald dude is cute. *blueak*

3) WWE - No kidding. This has got to be the longest running soap opera that went under the disguise of being a sport. It has everything a soap should have. Power, hate, betrayal, revenge and even love. Oh, and sheer lunacy. I'll admit that it did fool me when I was a kid. The plot is blinkingly stupid and the acting is so bad it makes Keanu Reeves look like a good actor.

Redeeming points : Big breasted women wrestling each other.

4) Desperate Housewives - I kid you not…when I first heard that people were downloading episodes of this show off the net, I thought that it was a title of a very cheesy porn. This show is pure evil. It deludes housewives into thinking that they can be as hot as Teri Hatcher when they grow old. It deludes the guys into thinking their wives can be as stunningly beautiful as that when they get old. Oh, and did I not mention the ridiculous plot?

Redeeming points : Eva Longoria.

5) One Tree Hill - Why so many people watch this show is way beyond the scope of my puny brain to process. The title says it all. There are already too many soaps on brainless teenagers. This just adds to the junk that is already out there.

Redeeming points : None at all.

Oh….did anybody realise that Japanese Animes are actually another name for 'Cartoon Soaps'?

    teri hatcher is not hot.

  4. bsjj Says:

  5. vincent Says:

michelle : Let me hear you say that when you reach her age

  6. Sashi Says:

I loved the ‘Ministry of Darkness’ vs ‘The Corporation’ storyline some years back on WWE (when it was still WWF).

Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Undertaker, The Rock - icons of the day. The current batch are all crap, and the storylines worse than ever.

  7. minishorts Says:

    eh… nothing beats:

    1) airwolf
    2) the a-team
    3) macguyver
    4) knight-rider
    5) magnum PI

I tell you all of the others suck… the above have the best-est theme songs too!

  8. lishun Says:

when i was younger, my cousins and i would religiously park ourselves in front of the tv every week to watch mcguyver build a bomb with string, a soda can and some dry twigs. ah.

well DH might have a sucky storyline but the storytelling’s good. that’s the main reason i watched it. as for OTH, the story’s better than the OC, nathan scott is hotter than whoever’s the lead guy in the OC, and peyton sawyer is the most screwed up high school student on tv! woohoo! sweet. however soapy and brainless, i’m addicted. haha.

  9. The other kenny Says:

I love Macguyver!!!!! I wanted to be like him so much that I disected my dad’s mini hi-fi and well you know what happened to me next..

David Hasseholf looked so cool there the last time before he joined bay-watch

  10. ed Says:

wow…i din know there are others who like to watch futurama, that show is just so funny, and i’m getting my hands on them end of this month, borrowing it from my fren…..

smallville ok wat……kristin kreuk is extremely gorgeous and the plot is good mah….

  11. shanks Says:

one word; LOST. two words; Destination LOST. three words; i hope not (finish the darn thing by the second season, please).

by the way, i thought the old mission impossible was nice, but i watched it again one or two years back when they did a rerun, man, was it bad. macguyver too. it was good for its time, though.

oh ya, i liked seinfeld too, but that’s a sitcom. and another thing, teri hatcher is very ugly.

  12. minishorts Says:

actually dynasty is the classic. still is.

    eheheh

THE BOLD AND THE BEAUTIFUL is teh suck.

  13. aBi Says:

Hey.. I love Smallville. That makes me a moron I guess. :P

  14. Jeremy C Says:

airwolf, knight rider, macgyver…As a kid, I wished for a swiss army knife, a sports car that has a life of its own and dreamt of being a chopper pilot…

magnum p.i., the saint…coupled with teenhood and puberty - being a lady-killer never looked more appealing

now, i’ll just stick with Tru-Calling, CSI, The OC and Desperate Housewives…oh, WWE can be therapeutic, at times…and that Korean chick in Lost is quite hot…

  15. Sashi Says:

the other kenny: David Hasselhoff wasn’t MacGyver lah. He was the Knight Rider. MacGyver was Richard Dean Anderson.

  16. Jayelle Says:

Have you seen House? It’s good! Very interesting and Dr. House has got to be the meanest person ever. Watching Desperate Housewives Season 2 now:) The on-going Feud between’s Rex’s mum and Bree is just too fun. Also the way Lynette handles her house husband.. the rest are okay.

  17. Kurt Says:

Ooh ooh minishorts is so spot on! Those five shows totally owned 80’s programming, and the theme songs are timeless.

tetete te, tetete te, te te te te tuh te te te te… (squint squint a-la Hawk)

  18. yuin Says:

woi! OTH got lotsa redeeming points okay, like all the actresses. hot…so hot..

  19. The other kenny Says:

Sashi : I know.. I forgot to type out the tittle of the show that he starred in.. sorry about that if you are a hasselhoff’s fan. I loved him on the spongebob the movie though.. “the control~~~~” LMAO~

Oh yeah, there’s another show that I love to watch last time. Quantum Leap!! woohoo~~ that show is teh pwned!!!!

I don’t remember much of Dynasty though. Except for that mind gripping theme song. LOL

  20. minishorts Says:

    kurt:

tetete te, tetete te, te te te te tuh te te te te… (squint squint a-la Hawk)

For some reason I can’t stop laughing when I saw that… can’t match to the rhythm though.

  21. lionel Says:

    Speaking of Richard Dean Anderson…

    Stargate SG-1.

shanks: Yes, Lost is great. But put some glasses on when you watch Desperate Housewives.

  22. The actual Kenny Says:

I used to watch WWF with my grandmother when it was Lex Luger VS Yokozuna on the main event.

I don’t think I’ll let my grandmother watch the product of today’s WWE.

“Ah boy, what is bra and panties match?”

  23. thatfreak Says:

    You forgot to mention LOST.

  24. alan Says:

how come no one mentions ‘24′ ? ok la, it’s not soap, but it has great suspense (better than those so called soaps)and action…Jack Bauer rocks!

airwolf has, hands down, THE best theme ever!

  25. Alex Says:

    CSI rawks.

  26. Sashi Says:

The other kenny: I’m no Hasselhoff fan. Oh, the horror!

And Quantum Leap! Yeah, that was cool! It’s one of my favourite ringtones on my phone (along with themes from Godfather, Axel F - not Crazy Frog version - and The Simpsons).

  27. Dabido (Teflon) Says:

    What is TV???

My mother watches ‘B&B’ most days! She likes to pretned that i watch it whenever she talks to my sister or sister in law … Damn embarassing as I really have no idea who Ridge, Brooke, Bridgette, Stephanie, Thorn, Sally, Nick ,Mosimo etc etc are … I just have to put up with my mother telling me about them all the time and her always pretending I EVEN CARE!!!!
