No one owes you a job

Friday, November 25th, 2005 @ 9:30 am | Life-logger

And you were wondering why is it so hard for employers to fill the gaps, while so many graduates are complaining about their lack of choices.

Him:i in penang…sob sob… wat to do
Her: how come you're sobbing
Him: engineers wat to do
Her: what in the world has that got to do with you being an engineer
Him:KL cannot find job. how's that sound to u
Her: maybe you're too picky lah employers sense this out like sniffing dogs. serious
Him:everyone say i picky, i say employers are picky
Her: i think employers have a right to be picky
Him: i apply 100 jobs in KL. interview 20. got 2 offers..i apply 2 jobs in penang. get 2 interviews. got 1 offer…who's picky?
Her: you're picky. 1 offer vs 2 offers. and you took the penang one. then you sound so sad. go figure
Him: that 2 offers is some lousy pay job…2000 vs 3000+… which one u choose
Her: he who cites 'lousy pay' is picky …2000+ kl and 3000+ penang… take lah KL, living expenses will cut down cos you'll be with your family…arrhhh what am i saying, you will complain anyway.
Him: tolls, petrol?
Her: you're the one who's sobbing.
Him:5 ppl company vs MNC
Her: oklah whatever suits your fancy
Him:i spend one year to get into engineering.now i will spend a long long way to get out from engineering
Her: maybe never should have gone into it lah… complain so much.
Him: i just hate a job sitting in front PC all day
Her: then CHANGE JOB LOR
Him: i did apply…but cant get…life…
Her: I thought you got it, that's why you're in penang! and then you say you not picky … wah round about circle…
Him:i say i cant get the job…those i got all the same…sit in front PC all day long
Her:you know i seriously think employers SNIFF out a demanding and picky attitude. this prolly causes your problems in getting what you want
Him:nope … it is all about experience, if u say i got attitude problem, y i can get my current job in MNC for one interview?
Her: if i kena one of my engineers talk like you. sure i damn kau benci ok.
Him: try to talk to another 80% of engineers over here. u think they like penang? everyone hate penang. except the local penang ppl
Her: … . well, i know you're very intelligent, and highly desired. are you in ABC MNC?
Him:NO
Her: then
Him:i will nvr go back there…can't imagine working in that shit company again, dun even giv u cubicle to work
Her: http://thescarfer.net/?p=88 read this… it might help
Him:dun even giv u project
Her: (i think you talk like this i also scared to give you project hehe)
Him: hey. i din talk like this until they make me sit for months doing nothing n until i piss off, complain, only they say they hire ppl for standby. n i m not the only one kena
Her: yeah well, you're in a new company now…you ought to sound a least more cheerful mah
Him:here ah… so far so good, ppl are helpful, i got my own cubicle. at least, they sending me to US soon…i got master degree pay, i got work to do. got project to handle
Her: wow see…you're so happy here. then why you sob in the beginning
Him: but it's penang… i can't even get a proper parking spot
Her: sheesh… i also dunno what you want. http://thestar.com.my/news/story.asp?file=/2005/11/6/nation/12359296&sec=nation did you read this? you should, and btw you're no longer a fresh grad, lack of experience is no longer an excuse.
Him: ai…few more years i dun wanna b engineer
Her: few more years don't want to work lah more like it
Him:if can i dun mind
Her:did you read the two posts i show you
Him:wait lah… no time now
Her: i think you have time lah… since you have time to chat with me
Him: chat n read diff
Her: you cannot multitask one ah
Him:man can one meh?
Her: eh a smart man with a masters degree who demands a 3000+ pay for an experience of less than 3 years, should be able to multitask.
Him:i'm multitask now mah…doing my work, n chat w u
Her:add another task… easy as pie
Him:cannot la. i m surfing web as well
Her: i told you your attitude sucks
Him: n talking on the phone, screwing up the finance for mixing my bank account number less one digit n i din get my money
Her: ok then i'll leave you alone. and you read that article. because it will do you a lot of good.
Him: i will leave that later…lets chat 1st…long time din chat w u
Her: right. i will leave you to later. because i don't have a master's degree pay. and i have to work.
Him:wat ever la. u earning more than me, no need master ….which prove engineering = lousy job
Her:i think its you. you go read back your chat log. and go figure. i seriously have to go. i have a deadline to catch. see ya

penang is a boring place to work, however, it’s a great place to get fat. :D

  2. anti Says:

    You lost me here..

  3. Mei Says:

Honestly, I think he dunno what he wants la. Either that or he just likes the sound of his own voice (read: enjoys complaining).

  4. S-Kay Says:

I just cannot stand why people would blame others first before blaming themselves. Oh I forgot..life’s like that

Anyway, employers do deserve the rights to be picky. Common sense what. Supply high, they can chooselah..what for simply pick. Supply low, gasak only what they can get..where got time to pick and flick. So it’s now up to grads to stand out and do what they can to get those jobs. And heck, unless you’re lucky or you’re really good..your first job will never be like all nice and with high pay. Duh! That’s the best part of it. You work hard, you get promoted (or you move and get paid higher) and when you look back, you’ll be like, “I’ve put in so much effort to be where I am today”

How come all my friends got a job within 3 months after their graduation? Cept one lah (because he was so bloody picky) Because they said to me, “Hey, it’s just our first job, better than sitting around earning nothing right? At least we get to earn some experience”. They’re accountants, engineers, IT grads, Marketing grads, biotech ppl…you name it lah.

KY is right..Penang makes you GROWW…I went there 3 days and I put on 3 kgs. The BF worked there 3 weeks, put on dunno how many kgs.

  5. Ashrufzz Says:

I am paid a minimum wage, doing all kind management job for the entire company, working long hours and I thought my complain was the worst. Reading this post, it proved to me that I was wrong. There are more people who are unappreciative and taking things for granted.

Personally, I think that fella should be put on doing ‘Direct Sales’ and he will realized how hard working life is.

  6. miniskirts Says:

    classic

  7. meng Says:

i think what u need the most is experinces rather then how much they paying u. without experinces i can said you got nothing to demand with.like you going for a war without a sword or skill..u will be dead man..all i trying to said is dont care how much they paying u now look 10 year ahead…u might own ur own company..knowledge is worthless no body can rape it from u…=) if u saying living is costly then cut down DRINKING N SMOKING…STOP GOING TO CLUB!!!

  8. The other kenny Says:

Typical Malaysians. They found out you are trying to comfort them, they whines even more..

  9. minishorts Says:

oh kenny, you’ve found the perfect explanation! and i’ve been wondering for weeks. haha.

  10. Curiousity Says:

Oh my, what a sad loser person you know….
He’s even more whinier than I….

    And you’re earning more than 3000+ ? Wowowow ;)

  11. iesnek Says:

eh? 2000 in KL is considered low pay one ah?

  12. S-Kay Says:

RM2000 in KL is considered OKlah. Lucky you get to earn that amount also lah with the competition so high (and as a fresh grad). Unless you go do sales with BAT lah then maybe you can get RM3k (that is if you got potential other than whining all day)

  13. Curiousity Says:

If you do any kind of sales you can earn more than that…..

  14. SaDdNesZ.jc Says:

Well, that what you get for driving everyone who subscribes to the Malaysian education system to get as many A’s as possible ~ People who know how to answer exam questions.

  15. S-Kay Says:

There’s this thing I heard from my sister that only an allocated number of people are ALLOWED to get A1 for Moral Studies. Weird. Imagine if you’re supposed to get A1 but because the quota penuh adi, they drop your grade down to A2 and so on.

  16. ShaolinTiger Says:

The quality of engineering graduates here SUCK, we have real trouble finding decent people.

Maybe he should consider that..maybe he should work to improve himself a little rather than whinging like a little kid who dropped his candy.

Those here even with experience are seriously lacking in skills, it seems like they got into I.T. or engineering just for the money and not because they like it. These people are useless to most companies with a clue, and WILL NOT get good job offers. They will end up doing shitty jobs like technical support and non-technical jobs like sales.

  17. meng Says:

engineer here is not low quality just that they always look for the easy way to solve solution. specially in construction line engineer always minus this minus that…we talking about safety ppl!!

  18. michaelooi Says:

No, ST is right. The quality of engineers here suck. Believe it or not, i’ve seen experienced ones that don’t even know how to read a schematic diagram… (I’m talking about EE engineers…)

I’ve seen too many of them.

Btw, Penang is indeed a boring place to work. That’s why I blog. (shhhhhhhh!!!I hope my boss is not a minishorts reader)

  19. fg Says:

whining @$$h0L3! go fug yourself. these fugtards should be mummified

  20. buaya69 Says:

i have trouble finding good engineers that won’t endanger the unknowing public with their blunders. any wonder why we looked at SG and pinched the homesick engineers back? i am soooo saaddddd! sobz

  21. Darryl Says:

** only applicable to Malaysian graduates who are unemployed because they whinge/complain too much

Ya, man. You stupid Malaysian graduates. I come back to look for job; and you bitches all accuse me saying I am so lucky to graduate overseas. Fuck you, man. I studied as hard as you (maybe harder, considering the money I had to fork out because of foreign exchange). I have to compete with angmor because those people get all the benefits of a citizen (e.g. industrial experience), while I have to stay in Uni to study a unit to compensate.

Now I come back, you all wanna fucking say I am so lucky. It’s because you guys are so fucking spoilt. My potential employers told me that I might only get at max RM1800 for my starting pay. I have to graciously accept. What to do? Just hope I’ll get a raise lah.

But no… you all want to start in higher post as your first starting point. And you all want get more money. What’s the meaning of this, man? You should just be thankful that your degree qualification paper doesn’t make you start from the level of an office boy or clerk. Or maybe waiters who work so fucking hard and then later get backpain or slipdisc.

    Be grateful lah, bastards!

** only applicable to Malaysian graduates who are unemployed because they whinge/complain too much

  22. senbai Says:

but Penang damn syiok lar. I quite like it here:mrgreen:. I hate KL, though I’m from KL.

I’ve worked with lots of MNC engineers here and I’ve never met an engineer with an attitude I’m comfortable with.

On the other hand, I’ve work with some Thai, Singapore and US engineers and they’re all professional people. They don’t play taichi and they don’t do mass emailing. They are pure problem solvers.

aiya….mou ngan tai Malaysia lah…too frust to write more

  23. ryuu Says:

i can’t believe this guy

he had everything good going for him, and then he complains about the parking lot. wtf

talk about attitude… this kind of people should live a seemingly hopeless life once, and then they will learn how not to take things for granted

and i suppose there’s no use for me to say that he’s better than most people already, because he probably has a superiority complex, and thinks that he deserve everything spotless. moreover, he makes his decision from his available options, and then he complains about his own decision. nothing is ever perfect for him, huh?

    what a whiner. strike.

  24. Lainie Says:

    Shit. I don’t know how you…just how…

OH MY GOD I GOT SO ANNOYED JUST READING IT

  25. ronlim Says:

Lainie: exactly how I felt too

    Whiner.

Sad to see a fresh grad with such an attitude. It’s obvious he does not appreciate a single thing that’s happened to him. There’s something wrong with everything, and I bet you deep down inside he feels the world owes him.

For a fresh grad, he’s got:
    - a job in an MNC company (Intel, I suspect)
    - monthly wage RM3000+
    - No need for physical labour in this unpredictable weather of our country
    - own cubicle
    - possibility of training in the US
    - proper work & lots of colleagues

    Instead of saying:
    - cool, this is great experience and pretties up my resume
    - I get to save/invest some extra cash
    - save expenses on travelling
    - learn and experience training in US
    - interact and gain knowledge from my colleagues

    He whines about:
    - boring ol’ Penang
    - parking space
    - somebody else’s pay
    - having to sit in front of a PC all day
    - his old job

    GAwd. Grow up.

  26. smashpOp Says:

if kl cannot find job.. then penang lagi cannot…

  27. way Says:

eh.. i also engineer la.. no problem.. attitude problem i think, go anywhere will also whine…

  28. obeliskdee Says:

very true indeed, i think they must change the way they think of the employment rates in M’sia. Let’s see la, 9 out of 10 guys i met all hogging the engineering “spotlight”. The situation is so different these days compare to the olden days where there’s just about 2 out of 10 eng. So, wats wrong with getting the experiance first baru think of the salary, etc. It’s always better to have a job better than cuci toilet, rite?

  29. ahlian Says:

my bf said now continue ur studies if u can afford it…….only 2008 will be abit better for engineers….

  30. Darren Says:

Take office politics and living cost. Add that up with the “expectation” of a decent city life. You get what u see today.

As for sales, I dun think it’s a shitty job. No company can ever survive without cutting a sale.

  31. pn Says:

wow, your blog are nice… just drop by and say hello!:lol:

  32. TreVesco Says:

Somehow, I felt the strong resonance.

Malaysian/Asian spirit (kiasu) will never stop the peer pressure.

That’s just typical Asian, who’ll never tell people that “hey, i got a good offer!”

What to do, I’m a whiner too.

  33. steve at the pub Says:

KY, work is as boring as you want to make it!

I am not a picky employer, I advertise and hope that ONE person will respond who actually wants the job (experience, qualifications irrelevant) then they are HIRED.

  34. anon Says:

wakakakakaka…. what a joke… whiner. dumb-s whining piece of sh*t. get a job. any job that gives you $ and experience will do. unless you’re born with a silver spoon in your mouth you cant really complain much… should be thankful you have a degree and can speak ‘Engrish’. think of all the SPM graduates that are out working now… do you see them complaining?

    DUMB@SS.

  35. AWM user Says:

personally… from the interviews I have conducted… I really don’t care if they are local or overseas grad (maybe other companies do). I would say that a lot of Malaysians are brilliant. Fantastic academic results.

Zero personality… or zero attempt to make an impression maybe. From one person to the other… no one makes an impression. They all blend in… together and it is so hard to tell them apart.

However, once in a while… someone DOES shine so much brighter… and he/she gets hired. Not even based on academic results… it is most often personality.

  36. Victor Says:

At the end of the day, ATTITUDE towards everything is most important.

  37. louyau-mike Says:

Was reading that from star before i jumped to this blog.

I really can’t complain about actresses who get paid to be dumb. But then … Most of us can’t get paid to be smart either! *with whining like that …*

p/s: Love your post …:) And hello … i am Mikel:)

  38. Albert Ng Says:

I’ve interviewed programmers who suck, too. And to think they had a high-flying degree from the UK, they’d be more analytical, or capable of spewing code without the help of a book.

  39. Wimal Says:

I agree with Victor, it is your attitude and not your aptitude that determines your altitude. (I Seriously hope I remember this right.)

  40. Vincent Says:

Your friend (HIM) does bitch a lot… I had to go through that interview + resume crap-phase too! lol. I’m an engineer and I think its pretty cool ~ love my job!
