The Economist has a very interesting index that came out recently called the Democratic Index. It’s featured on the “The World In 2007″ publication that’s out. But you can download a free copy from here.

You can see our country is pretty low on the Index. Why is it low is that the many aspects this index takes into account to justify a high distinction on the index or to be referred to as Full Democracies or Flawed. US and UK do not score very highly either, mostly because of the lack of public participation in their case.

My opinion: Public interest and participation is good. However understand that what we say and do have implications. Be responsible for it and if you are willing to stand up, be ready to the army of people asking you to sit down.

I’ve already said before, let’s start covering all our bases before something bad happens. Malaysians are mixing our socio-political system, traditional media, blogging and democratic principles. One way or another bad things will happen.

Voting for what you believe in is one thing. Making sure that what you voted for goes into effect is another. Malaysians in general are too complacent and unfortunately ignorant to enact what they believe in. Most just want to know that if they can get their commercialized coffee and gym session on…then vote for the lesser of two evils.

It works, but nothing ever changes. Certainly not now.

what if you didn’t vote for a BN government but voted for opposition?

does that mean you should still support the BN governement because just because a majority of the country voted for it? what happens to the voices of the minority that never wanted the BN government in the first place?
