i just took my SPM last year and while i was happy to run around telling everyone i got 10A’s, i know that’s not what i really got. it’s not just English, the standard for all the SPM subjects have dropped. i know myself well and based on how much i studied, i sure as hell didn’t get A’s for everything.

i’m going for a course that’s based on coursework and my grades will be in average instead. it was nice to have people look at me like i’m smart but i don’t want to continue pretending.

why they keep opting to make us more and more stupid, i’ll never know.

Funny, I came from BM medium schools but I don’t seems to have problem with English. Is it that the English teacher’s standard now dropped? Or there is just lack of interest for the young to put more effort in learning English such as reading the newspaper, fiction or non-fiction books.

It seems like a lot of people are content with just staying in their comfort zones and don’t seem to care about anything else. :/

If you read NST however, they will tell you that the majority of the people are FOR it. Malaysiakini has a total blackout on this subject though.

And your friend still insists on wearing black and hanging out at kopitiams drinking kopi o kao.

I would say Malaysia is in good shape, no?

I say, just bring back the old system. 6 core subjects, having to average 1s and 2s to get 1st grade etc; calculation of overall grades based on core subjects + electives.

I don’t know what’s wrong with that? It’s a nice balance to have a ‘standard’ result while not making English compulsory.

I do understand where the ministry is coming from when it comes to the sudden change of making English compulsory. Imagine, the S&M teachers having a hard time after 5 years teaching in English in relation to an average rural student – this will indeed place them in disadvantage.

and a long , say decade long plan to make English compulsory seems too far fetched.

they are afraid that if ppl get too smart… these ppl will find out that they have been ridiculed for so long and do the right thing. supress education, control the population.
