Or a very haphazard superior?

A very haphazard superior, because you can always (patiently) explain to the confused subordinate, and overtime s/he will “get it”.

Haphazard superior is better. Because that way, you can always confuse him / her into doing what you want. Confused subordinate can be really useless for a really long time no matter how much you explain or try.

For me, it goes without saying that a haphazard superior is worse. Think from this perspective: Don’t you agree that the subordinate is always confused as the superior has been behaving haphazardly since time immemorial?…

The workforce of the world is full of both haphazardous supervisors/directors and the confused subordinates.
You can choose to be an informed subordinate.
