To WOW or not to WOW
I'm not exactly the most discreet person in the world, and in the past I've made many obvious connections between my mood swings and 'those dreaded times of the months'. I also talk openly about expressing milk for Paul, both on the blog and on Twitter, as well as on my own Facebook wall.
What I've never ever spoken about is what brand of sanitary napkins I use, whether I prefer tampons, do I like those 'dry-weave technology stuff, and what a whiff of stained female hygienic pad can smell like.
…
So when Kotex sent me their latest KOTEX LUXE Ultrathin Design Pads, with the huge 'WOW' printed on the promotional box, I really, literally exclaimed, 'WOW!'
For bloggers only media release. I liked this, it's specially printed on glossy paper!
The copy says that the Ultrathin Design Pads are 'the answer to transform pads from 'white' to 'WOW'!
Actually all the women who were present at home when I opened the package kept going 'wow' at the package. It certainly gave us many things to laugh about.
…
I do think that the promotional preview box was done up excellently. I got two 'Special Edition' tins of the new Design Pads. The design of the tin is really beautiful. I think it's supposed to beckon you to keep the tin long after you've used up the pads, however with the Kotex logo all over the box, I'm really not sure what I'll reuse the box for. (When I travel, I tend to bring tampons – way more discreet).
Unboxed, each tin (which are for a limited time only), contains six pieces of individually wrapped sanitary pads. The wrappings are nothing to shout about, the design is stamped onto the pad itself.
The media release did say that the new Design Pads will come with 'unique, resuable drawstring polybags', carrying individual pouch wraps to match the design-theme of the pads. Apparently you don't have to be shy taking your pads to the washroom anymore.
Ahem.
There's a 'LOOK BOOK' showcasing some of the designs.
Opening page has a single line, trying to make a statement.
And then, the shocker! DESIGN PADS! WOW! There are six designs in all, apparently influenced by contemporary fashion trends, providing the 'sweet girl-next-door' feel to 'indie-chic' look.
Errr…. Indie-Chic?
Like seriously, honestly, it doesn't really matter what design is on the pad I'm wearing! I don't show off my pads, whether they're in-their-pack, or used and ready to be disposed.

Hrrrmmmm…
Now I'm the kind of person who seeks comfort above all things. That time of the month is annoying enough – it makes me grumpy, sleepy, it makes me very hungry and often, I'm worried about leak issues and I hate it that I have to wear special undies, and that I can't wear tighter pants. The entire nine months that I was pregnant was a relief – because I didn't see my monthly visitor paying me her regular visit, and you can imagine how distressed I was to find out I wasn't like any other normal woman – my period returned exactly a month after I completed my confinement.
Well, I digressed. Suffice to say, comfort and discreet convenience, is priority in my choice of selecting a sanitary napkin. I like tampons for their convenience, and the fact that they're so small, and that you can't even feel a tampon once you've stuck it in correctly. I use a combination of both tampon and sanitary pads- because tampons are more expensive (I only use those with applicators), and when it comes to sanitary pads, I alternate between Whisper, Kotex, Laurier (whichever has a special price on the day I buy them) and occasionally those house brand types from Guardian or Watson's (because, price does matter).
DESIGN of the PAD, is certainly NOT something that will make me pick one brand over the other. As my sis-in-law commented, 'WHO WOULD WANNA SEE WHAT MY PAD LOOKS LIKE?'
So anyway… there's my honest blurt-out.
Kotex threw in a really nice notepad into the package as a nice gift. Finishing and quality looks awesome – it's just that, I work in a pretty serious environment, with many male colleagues and I'm not sure I wanna hold a notepad that has KOTEX stamped on the cover (as seen in photo) as well as on EVERY PAGE!

The mug – okay I took this to the office. It's cool, it's handy. One of those, 'design pops up when your drink is hot' things. Of course it has the Kotex Luxe logo on the mug, but ah, the logo disappears soon enough since my office is rather chilly.
…
So this was a review of my experience. Did I say Wow? You bet. I must say kudos to Kotex for having certainly innovated in terms of developing their products. Maybe I'm just a little too old to appreciate design-pads. But hey, THANKS FOR THE MUG! I LOVED IT!

HAH!
I think we can all agree my review on this subject matter was so much more cooler than this! HAHAHAHHA!
Sorry hor, feeling a bit smug, because I predicted 5 years ago that one day someone would pay to write a review on these products.
I wasn’t paid ok!! Just terima barang je… But it was an interesting experience larrr…
have to agree with your SIL though. but Kotex sure did a whole new transformation of what pads can be.
Claire.
An interesting post on and essentially female topic.
All I will say is that the producers of femine products are doing their best to re-invent by new marketing ideas for a product that all women need and use.
Like you stated, women do not show off such either befor or afte use.
David
i wonder how old is the creative designer? 15? come on! why would i need or want to use pads with designs which will be stained in the end anyway?
omg. SERIOUSLY?
An interesting post . Like you stated
Hi Clare, I read this post and thought I’d share my relief when I found out about this through my close friend, MoonCup Menstrual cup.

No leaks and environmentally friendly. Cant get it here though, I suppose you can order it online.
Love it now that I have it. Works a lot better than a tampon.
